This will be an occasional blog charting my quest to re-visit all the curious and unusual sites recorded by journalist Edmund Vale in his 1939 book "Curiosities of Town and Countryside".
The book was first published in 1940 and captures Britain just before the cataclysmic upheaval of World War II, a Britain that still retained an air of folkloric mystery, where there were still villages and hamlets that may not yet have felt the modernising breath of the 20th Century - where the old stories still live large in the common memory.
I will post as-and-when I visit places and in no particualr order. I invite you to join me on this journey were we can see what has survived the relentless march of progress and if, in the lesser visited nooks and corners of this country, those half-glimpsed windows into our curious past still exisit .
